Import a Word Document

A Sample Word Document has been created for this Tutorial.

Unzip and open Sample.doc in Microsoft Word.

It has a Table of Contents generated from the Heading 1 and Heading 2 Styles.

Open the Home Tab

 Examine the Styles

You absolutely must have the Heading 1 and Heading 2 styles in your Word Doc.

Dr. Explain uses them to automatically separate your Word Document into HTML5 topics based on your Heading 1 and Heading 2 styles.

Each Heading 1 gets converted to a new Topic.

Each Heading 2 gets converted to a SubTopic under your main Topic.

In addition to these two essential Styles, you would be using the Bold and Italic styles.

That is all you need.

Before you begin the Import operation, make sure the Heading 1 and Heading 2 appear exactly the way you want it.

A quick way to check this is to open the View Tab.

Check the Navigation Pane

Dr. Explain will use this structure to break out to the Topics and SubTopics

Note: You do not need to have a Table of Contents in your Word Doc.

Dr. Explain recreates a brand new Table of Contents based on the Topics and SubTopics.

So why bother generating a Table of Contents in your Word Doc?

It is a good practice to have a Table of Contents to make it easy to navigate a large Word Document. Besides, you need it if you wanted to save this Word Doc as a PDF.

Save this Sample Word Doc as a PDF.

Make sure to enter a meaningful Title like Parcel Map User Guide (PDF)

This is what will appear on the browser tab.

Open Options

Check Create bookmarks

Select Headings

The generated PDF will have a Table of Contents based on Heading 1 and Heading 2 in your Word Doc.

Tip: Before saving your Word Doc as a PDF, select all your text with <Ctrl>-A and change the font to Calibri Light, Size 12.

The resulting PDF would look great when viewed on an iPad or iPhone.

View a copy of Sample.pdf

Open Bookmarks

This opens your Table of Contents.

This is a convenient way to jump to any Topic within your PDF document.

Now that you are satisfied the way your PDF looks, it is time to generated your Web Help version using Dr. Explain
