Limitations of using Multi-Part Graphics

 
Enabling the Multi-Part Graphics option allows you to define multiple selection areas using the drawing tools before you press the Search button.
 
However, there are limitations on how you can use the drawing tools
 
You cannot mix and match the Point, Line, and Area Tools.
 
In other words, you cannot use the Point Tool to draw a point and then use the Line Tool to draw a line.
 
 
Run a simple test to verify this.
 
Clear the selection.
 
Set your Search Layer = Parcel
 
Turn off the Zoning Layer.
 
Enable Multi-Part Graphics.
 
Check the Buffer option.
 
Set the Buffer distance to 200 feet.
 
Activate the Draw Point Tool.
 
Draw a Point on the map.
 
 
Switch to the Draw Line Tool.
 
You will immediately get this warning message:
Mixing major geometry types like points, lines and polygons is not supported.
 
 
You cannot use any other drawing tools with the Point Tool.
 
Press Cancel
 
Add another point on the map.
 
 
Press Search
 
The search returns 14 parcels within 200 feet of the two points you added to the map.
 
 
Try using the Draw Line Tool in combination with the Draw Polyline Tool.
 
Open the By Shape Tab
 
Clear the Selection
 
Clear the Buffer
 
Activate the Draw Line Tool.
 
Draw a line segment on the map.
 
 
Do not press Search yet!
 
Switch to the Draw Polyline Tool.
 
Notice, the error message does not appear this time.
 
Draw a polyline.
 
Click to start
 
Click to add a vertex
 
Double click to finish the polyline.
 
 
Press Search
 
A 200 feet green buffer is drawn around the line and the polyline.
 
This buffer intersects 35 Parcels.
 
 
Open the By Shape Tab
 
Clear the Selection
 
Clear the Buffer
 
Activate the Draw Extent Tool.
 
Draw a rectangle to select two parcels.
 
 
Switch to the Draw Circle Tool.
 
Notice, there are no error messages.
 
Draw a circle on the map.
 
 
Switch to the Draw Polygon Tool.
 
Draw a polygon.
 
Click to enter the first vertex
Click to enter the next vertex
Double click to close the polygon.
 
 
You have three shapes on the map that define areas.
 
Press Search.
 
These three shapes are buffered by 200 feet.
 
They are represented by the green buffers.
 
41 Parcels are found that intersect these green buffers.
 
The selected parcels are highlighted in orange.
 
 
Once you have a set of selected features, you can run additional Spatial Tools on them.
